Explain your background or how you got interested in your chosen field?:

I became interested in artificial insemination when I was researching ways to raise and sell beef. I've had cows for a while, but it was hobby farm type stuff. My mom ai'd dairy cows for a long time, and my grandfather on my dad's side was one of the first people in the US to utilize AI in dairy cattle. In Alaska, the cattle community is small, and finding new genetics typically means driving through Canada both ways, which gets expensive in a hurry! It doesn't take long for a herds' family tree to turn into a tumbleweed. Artificial insemination just made sense.

What do you think helped you the most to make a career as a woman? What is the biggest factor that has helped you be successful?:

I owe all of my success to God. He's the One who has opened up doors and has helped me use the gifts He gave me.

As a female leader, what has been the most significant barrier in your career?:

My own insecurities. They can be a heavy weight, and all I can do is push forward.

What mistakes have you made along the way and what did you learn from them?:

Not communicating! I tend to get to a point where communicating is exhausting and I shut down. I've realized it's way easier to communicate than to let messages and emails go unanswered.

Do you or did you have a woman leader as a mentor or are there specific women who inspired you and why?:

Definitely my mom! She's been a huge supporter from the beginning. She encouraged me to learn how to ai cows, and her having experience in it as well has given me a resource to lean on when I have questions.

You are a busy woman. What do you do to relax and maintain good mental health?:

I try to read a book a month, but I haven't quite gotten there. One of my favorite book series is James Herriot's All Creatures Great and Small series. It's lighthearted and I can relate to much of what he goes through. I also try to get really good sleep! It's amazing how a good night's rest can completely change your perspective!

I have a website and a Facebook page. I've found Facebook to be the most valuable in connecting with new clients.
